Classic Album Review: Asleep At The Wheel | Ride With Bob

Coutnry royalty pay their respects to Bob Wills — with the Wheel as house band.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

It has been a helluva year for Bob Wills.

The Texas swing pioneer has been toasted on two tribute CDs: Last fall’s first-rate effort from Chicago’s Jon Langford and his Pine Valley Cosmonauts, and now this star-studded party hosted by Austin’s Asleep At The Wheel. The veteran crew led by Ray Benson play house band as country royalty line up to pay their respects to the smooth countrypolitan sound of Wills and his Texas Playboys. Dwight Yoakam, Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Reba McEntire, Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson all bop and grin their way through Wills classics such as Roly Poly, Right Or Wrong and Take Me Back To Tulsa. And while it doesn’t have the tipsy exuberance of the PVCs’ album, Ride With Bob is still a fun little trip back to the good ol’ days.
