Classic Album Review: Drain STH | Freaks Of Nature

The Swedish metal maidens wield the hammer of the goddesses on their second LP.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

The STH stands for Stockholm; three little letters to distinguish these Swedish metal maidens from a U.S. act with the same name. But they also give you a hint of what you’re in for.

After all, Sweden is the home of death metal and bubble-pop — and these women definitely aren’t Roxette. Like their last album Horror Wrestling, Freaks Of Nature is a fire-and-ice collision of subterranean glacial bass / drums and searing Viking-rock metal, comparable to Type O Negative and early Black Sabbath. These she-devils come up short in the variety and originality departments — for instance, Black Is Black’s chorus is just Ozzy Osbourne’s No More Tears with different words — but hey, it’s hard to be subtle when you’re wielding the hammer of the goddesses.
