Classic Album Review: Tekla | Somebody Else

The Swedish dance-pop nightingale doesn't know who she is on her debut album.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

“I am not the one you think I am — I’m somebody else,” sings Swedish dance-pop nightingale Tekla on her debut disc’s title track.

I’m inclined to agree with her. Trouble is, after listening to this collection of hypnotic grooves that fall somewhere between the dance floor and the chill-out room, I’m not too sure who that somebody else is. Sometimes, the trippy techno and poppy melodies remind you of Madonna; other times, her smoky sexuality recalls Chrissie Hynde; still others, the pristine harmonies suggest Tori Amos. None of those is a bad thing; it’s just that I (and you) might like her better if she would just be herself.
