Classic Album Review: Jim White | Drill a Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See

The freaky Floridian welcomes some Canadian talent to his entertaining third LP.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Freaky Floridian Jim White is a cross between a trailer-park Tom Waits and a backwoods Beck — an oddball who combines twangy guitars, tangy southern gothic lyrics and rangy low-wattage folk-hop into bizarre, surprisingly soulful narratives that are equal parts disturbing and entertaining.

But on this expansively titled disc, nothing is more disturbing (or ultimately entertaining) than cuts that find the twisted rootsman teaming up with Canucks like Barenaked Ladies, The Sadies and Oh Susanna’s Suzie Ungerleider. Who says the South and the North can’t get along?
