Emily Millard swoons When You Unfold Your Love on her lush and irresistibly alluring comeback single — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
A preview of the B.C. singer-songwriter’s upcoming fourth studio album Hazy Blue (due Oct. 4), When You Unfold Your Love is a hypnotic hybrid of alt-pop, soul and electronics that woo you into a late-night netherworld with their sweet caress. As slowly percolating drum pads, funky bass licks and ringing, distortion-dusted guitars swirl around Millard’s jazzy, trumpet-like vocals, she seals the deal with her yearning, sensual lyrics:
“Right on time in a world that won’t stop turning
You’re one in a million, I’m learning
How to weaken my defences everyday you’re near to me
It’s a silent conversation we are having skin to skin
Want to grant you all your wishes
When you unfold your love.”
It’s a fine introduction to the fittingly titled Hazy Blue, a rich tapestry of love ballads that reflect both the softness and melancholy of life’s romantic nuances. The album also marks Millard’s long-overdue return following a seven-year hiatus and a creative rebirth.
Formerly known as Miss Emily Brown, Millard’s journey back to songwriting follows extensive touring across North America and Europe, a period marked by financial instability and the toll it took on her mental and physical well-being. Seeking respite, she paused her nomadic lifestyle, settling in Vancouver to pursue a composition degree and nurture her artistic community. This newfound stability became fertile ground for Hazy Blue, a moody masterpiece blending Millard’s ethereal vocals with rich orchestration, capturing themes from teenage heartache to the complexities of mature love.
Recorded in 2023 at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios with co-producer John Raham, Hazy Blue features a stellar lineup of Vancouver musicians. Millard’s collaborative approach with Raham allowed for spontaneous creativity, weaving together a sonic narrative that transcends traditional genre boundaries. From the introspective title track to poignant The Mouth of Mount Joan, each song on the album reveals layers of emotional depth and sonic experimentation. Hazy Blue stands as a testament to Millard’s resilience and artistic evolution, offering listeners a contemplative exploration of love in all its forms amidst the turbulence of modern life.
