Classic Album Review: Squarepusher | Ultravisitor

The U.K. electronicist challenges your preconceptions — but not your patience.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Musical Luddites who believe electronica is just soulless computer wankery should get acquainted with U.K. artist Tom (Squarepusher) Jenkinson.

Or at least with his latest conscious-expanding effort Ultravisitor, which smartly intercuts organic elements — jazzy skittering drums, virtuoso basslines and gently plucked guitars — with electronica’s paranoid swooshes and fever-dream sonic snippets. The result: Cinematic, expansive and yes, soulful sonic creations that challenge your preconceptions but not your patience.
