Classic Album Review: The Frames | Set List

Glen Hansard and his Irish bandmates are captured in full cathartic flight.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you have been smart or lucky enough to see The Frames perform, you know how dynamic these earthy Irish rockers are live. If you haven’t, get a taste of what you missed with their powerful and passionate Set List.

Recorded in their Dublin backyard in 2002, this enthralling 73-minute document captures the band in full cathartic flight. Charismatic frontman Glen Hansard opens his heart, bares his soul and pleads his case as the musicians illustrate his reflective, romantic odes with equal measures of poignant melody, epic grandeur, roots-rock honesty and burning intensity. Imagine U2 if Bono had his pretentiousness surgically removed — or perhaps The Tragically Hip after a few cases of Guinness — and you’ve got the right frame of reference. Don’t miss them next time — and don’t miss this in the meantime.
