Classic Album Review: Method Man | Tical 0: The Prequel

The Wu-Tanger barely seems to be trying on this cobbled-together offering.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Tical was a hip-hop landmark that confirmed Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man truly was his own, um, you know.

These days, unfortunately, he seems more interested in playing Cheech to Redman’s Chong. And when it comes to rap, he’s barely trying. The third in his Tical series is about as inspired and original as its title, with Meth and the usual crop of VIPs and Wu Tangers — Missy, Snoop, Ludacris, Busta, Raekwon, Ghostface — tossing off forgettable rhymes over generic tracks with cobbled-together grooves. Maybe it’s not all his fault — word is Wu mastermind RZA and Meth recorded an entire disc that was vetoed by his label. Whoever’s to blame, Tical is lacking in both madness and, um, you know.
