Albums Of The Week: Cloud Nothings | Final Summer

The noisy Cleveland indie-rockers continue to punch well above their weight.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Over the past 15 years, Cleveland’s loudest export Cloud Nothings have become part of the fabric of modern indie-rock with a steady run of reliably fantastic records. Their winning streak continues unabated with Final Summer — an album so assured, so instantly satisfying, that it forces you to pause and realize you’re listening to one of the great American rock bands in their prime.

Recorded with Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War On Drugs), mixed by Sarah Tudzin (Illuminati Hotties, Pom Pom Squad), and mastered by Jack Callahan (Ryley Walker, Wolf Eyes), the opening title track Final Summer is the perfect reminder of what Cloud Nothings do best. The track emerges from a wash of crackling synths before roaring to life with a cutting riff and driving beat. Very few bands can pack a dynamic journey into a hooky rock song as effectively as Cloud Nothings and after its four minutes are up Final Summer will have you hitting repeat to take the ride again.

Guitarist/vocalist Dylan Baldi explains: “Final Summer is about reconciling past versions of myself with the self I see when I look in the mirror every morning, always trying to learn more and using that knowledge to take the leaps of faith that are necessary to try new things and continue living and growing. Cloud Nothings has been around for 14 years now, and we wouldn’t have been able to power through the many ups and downs of those years without taking the chorus of Final Summer to heart: I have some thoughts, I have some dreams, but I need to be happy with what I’ve got for me.”

Over their nearly 15-year career, Cloud Nothings have evolved from scrappy lofi upstarts into one of the most reliably phenomenal mainstays in guitar music. Made up of Baldi, drummer Jayson Gerycz and bassist Chris Brown, the band have become part of the fabric of modern indie-rock as we know it, releasing an unbroken streak of great albums and touring relentlessly. Final Summer picks up where they left off, providing the perfect hint at what’s to come from the prolific group, and proving exactly why Cloud Nothings are one of our best and most enduring rock bands.”
