Classic Album Review: Pope John Paul II | Abbà Pater

If you play this backwards, does it sound like Black Sabbath?

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

 


And they say William Shatner albums are weird.

Well, even Shatner’s acid-flashback version of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds can’t hold a candle to this 50-minute disc of Pope John Paul II reciting prayers, chants and homilies in five languages over soothing classical, New Age and world music tracks. While some of JP’s pearls of wisdom (“Do not be satisfied with mediocrity”) put us in mind of that Baz Luhrmann Sunscreen song, his heavy Polish accent often makes him sound like Bela Lugosi reading the Bible over a John Tesh record. Oh, and here’s a thought: If you play this backwards, does it sound like Black Sabbath?
