Classic Album Review: David Hillyard & The Rocksteady 7 | Playtime

The ska-sax MVP calls in some favours on his debut solo set of breezy, bouncy fare.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Even ska fans might not have heard of David Hillyard — but they have almost definitely heard him.

The talented saxophone player has played with California’s Hepcat, New York City’s Slackers, and pretty much every band between that knows how to skank. On his debut solo disc, Hillyard calls in some favours, recruiting members of several bands to back him on a series of breezy, bouncy instrumentals — and a couple of vocal numbers — that deftly toe the line between funky jazz and sophisticated ska. Your rude-boy nephew will dig it. But then again, so will your jazzbo grandad.
