Classic Album Review: April March | Chrominance Decoder

The cartoon-pop chanteuse is tres chic — and tres predictable, unfortunately.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you think her name is too kitschy-cool to be true, you’re right.

Pseudo-French chanteuse April March is actually American Elinor Blake, a former Ren And Stimpy animator who has transformed herself into a cartoonish pop star. Happily ensconced in Combustible Edison’s space-age bachelor pad, March breathily croons en Francais and doo-doo-doos her way through the bouncy electronica exotica of her cheese-whiz musical cohort Bertrand Burgulat (if that’s his real name). It’s all tres chic, but nothing that Stereolab doesn’t do — and do better.
