Do you know where you were on March 17, 2010? I do. I was at SXSW in Austin, looking forward to seeing Alex Chilton and Big Star play later in the week. Then, just days before the gig, the iconoclastic singer-songwriter and guitarist died at age 59 in New Orleans following a heart attack. Naturally, the gig he never played turned into a star-studded celebration / memorial / tribute, with Curt Kirkwood, Chris Stamey, M. Ward, Mike Mills, John Doe, Sondre Lerche, Chuck Prophet, Evan Dando, the Watson Twins and more joining Chilton’s surviving bandmates. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house (including mine).
