Jordy Walker tries to bend space and time to his own emotional ends in his experimental, entrancing new single and video Light Years — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
The first preview of the Yukon musician’s upcoming album Gifted With Fiction — set for release in April — Light Years offers an ambitious, artfully appealing odyssey of noise-pop transcendence set in a sonic and stylistic dimension unlike any other. Roughly assembled from a minimalist drum beat, quietly soothing guitar arpeggios, rudely squiggling synthesizers and Jordy’s hushed and dusted vocals, the track slowly but surely builds and evolves into a lushly layered supernova that encompasses the worlds of shoegaze, art-pop, noise-rock and more. It’s the perfect setting for his yearning lyrics, which take us on a romantic journey that bridges outer and inner space, parsing and analyzing the physical properties of attraction and rejection:
“I am leaving my body
I am coming home again
I am moving in a line
But it’s hardly straight
I want you to catch me
In a turbulent embrace
I want you to come back to me
In that semi-altered state.”
“I don’t endorse the stuff but I want you to be happy
If you drift enough you’ll end up light years away
I can see your eyes are a distant constellation
I am floating somewhere in your space
I am tumbling somewhere in your space.”
If it seems, cinematic, no wonder. Walker, a musician, film composer, producer, and sound artist in Whitehorse, has spent decades working behind the scenes with other artists. Gifted With Fiction is his first solo album in 20 years, reflecting a return to his musical roots and a unique sound. The album features a mix of experimental textures, blending guitar elements from noise, shoegaze, and art rock with melodies from indie pop and electronic soundscapes. Gifted With Fiction highlights an expertise honed through film scoring, sound art, and studio production for other artists.
Walker has either performed live or collaborated in studio sessions with notable artists such as Richard Reed Parry, Christine Fellows, Kim Barlow, Little Scream, The Burning Hell, Morlove and many others. His participatory sound-art installations have been showcased in Toronto, Whitehorse, and Ottawa. As a performer, he has graced stages across the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Japan. Additionally, Walker has composed music for award-winning short and feature-length documentaries.
