Nerves Are Definitely Not Running On Empty

The dark-hearted Irish post-punks come out swinging on their grim new single.

Nerves come up anything but Empty on their thunderous, intense and pitch-black new single — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

The first salvo from the west Irish post-punk bruisers’ upcoming EP Glórach, Empty is a brutalist, massively heavy slab of sound carved from droning guitar and bass, corrosive blasts of feedback and gut-wrenching vocals. The band have married gothic punk and metallic soundscapes to industrial overtones, lyrics dealing with loss and mental health and a visual aesthetic seeped in their inherent Irish sensibilities. Death, degradation and emigration in Ireland are themes bound to the DNA of both Empty and Glórach.

Not surprisingly, Nerves have built a reputation as one of the most devastating live acts in the country over the past two years, with a consistent string of headline shows and support slots around Ireland, fueled by insistent word-of-mouth buzz. They recently made their U.K. debut with a loud, sweaty and cathartic show in Brixton and have supported the best in Irish and U.K. modern punk.

They have been compared to My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Big Black and Bauhaus, but in truth the sound delivered across the five tracks of this EP is harder to define. Glórach arrives March 15 digitally and on vinyl. With shows in Europe, and an Irish/U.K. tour coming alongside the release, Nerves are making a massive statement of intent for the year to come.
