Classic Album Review: The Phoids | The Phoids

The New Yorkers traffick in the rootsy, real sounds of Middle American music.

This came out in 1998 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

For a bunch of New Yorkers, The Phoids sure have a sound straight from the heart of Middle America.

And fittingly, their music is a melting pot of styles and sources, drawing on bar-band riffs, country twang, power pop melodies and rock roots. There’s no gloss, no glitz and no gimmicks — just four talented guys playing simple, heartfelt rock ’n’ roll. It’s incredible how refreshing that sounds these days.
