Classic Album Review: Paul (Wine) Jones | Mule

The Mississippi welder dovetails rural tunes to hypnotic, chugging roadhouse blues.

This came out in 1998 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

A welder by trade, Mississippian Paul (Wine) Jones brings the same sort of earthy, solid craftsmanship to his music.

On his debut disc, he artfully dovetails folky, rural tunes to hypnotic, chugging roadhouse blues arrangements. Then he sands it down with his soulful rasp of a voice and dabs on just a touch of Jimi Hendrix’s wah-wah for a modern sheen. Like plenty of craftsmen, Wine starts out with slabs of raw material and ends up with a work of art.
