Classic DVD Review: Various Artists | Concert for George

Musical friends band together to honour the late Beatle a year after his passing.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

On Nov. 29, 2002, a year to the day after George Harrison’s death from cancer, some old friends gathered to celebrate the late Beatle and his music. Of course, when your old friends include Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Billy Preston, Ravi Shankar and Ringo Starr, it’s only natural that cameras and tapes were rolling.

The result is the two-DVD Concert For George, which finds Clapton and George’s son Dhani leading this rotating who’s who crew through more than two hours of Beatles and Harrison classics. Monty Python members provide some comic relief, while Ringo provides some heart-squeezing poignance with Photograph, whose lyrics — “All I’ve got is a photograph / And I realize you’re not coming back anymore” — sum up his feelings with simple, apt elegance.
