The Craig Brown Band guide you through the mean streets of an urban ghost town in their rambunctious new single and video My Side Of Town — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
A preview of the Detroit rock ’n’ roll darlings’ upcoming sophomore album Let’s Never Leave This Filthy World, the scrappy and defiant My Side Of Town fuses country and indie-rock with dashes of garage-punk and psychedelia into a raucous, raw-boned anthem for the downtrodden — albeit with grim lyrics that unflinchingly chronicle a life spent trapped on the wrong side of the tracks:
“We’re the ones at home missing out,
We’re not out with our friends, we’re stuck on the couch
Here it’s real, the dead bodies are real
On my side of town, there’s no one around
On your side of town, it makes a difference if no one ever comes out.”
In case you didn’t already notice, Brown has a unique ability to meet complex topics with charisma and honesty, crafting music that is relatable, compelling and endearing. On their new album, fans of their 2017 Third Man Records debut The Lucky Ones Forget can look forward to the same blend of rock ’n’ roll, country twang and unstoppable energy — along with a more introspective vein of songwriting they may not have experienced.
Brown’s musical roots trace back to punk and garage-rock groups like Terrible Twos, The Mahonies and Liquor Store. Brown is also a long-time collaborator with The Kelly Jean Caldwell Band and The Drinkard Sisters, whose angelic vocals add a beautiful depth to his new songs.
Recorded with Warren Defever (His Name is Alive, Gories, Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore) and Adam Pressley (Jamaican Queens, Ohtis), Let’s Never Leave This Filthy World is due soon on Lazy Boy Records. Since the recording process spanned an extended period of time due to the pandemic, it reflects the growth and evolution of the band as artists and humans. Together, the bandmembers deliver a beautiful, thoughtful, well-crafted piece of work that captures the emotions experienced globally during a time of uncertainty.
Brown and co. are gearing up to bring their high-energy, genre-bending show to Europe for a third time to celebrate the album’s release. The Craig Brown Band might be the only band on the planet who can share a stage with everyone from Negative Approach to Dwight Yoakam. When you listen to tracks like My Side Of Town, their versatility and appeal are no mystery.
