Classic Album Review: Stark Reality | Now Reissue

Some albums must be heard to be believed. Hear this and you still won’t believe it.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

THE ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE: 1970.

THE BACK STORY: You think H.R. Pufnstuf is twisted kids’ fare? It can’t hold a candle to Stark Reality’s Now. Easily one of the most inappropriate and mind-warping children’s records of all time, this mesmerizing disc features a slate of Hoagy Carmichael chestnuts — reshaped into trippy, epic-length flights of fancy by a groovy acid-drenched jazz-fusion septet. Some albums must be heard to be believed. Hear this and you still won’t believe it.

THE GOODIES: Virtually every second of this 75-minute opus flies the freak flag very, very high.

THE EXTRAS: A handful of cuts that didn’t fit on the original album. Or on any other album ever made.
