Classic Album Review: Spiritualized | The Complete Works Volume One

Jason Pierce rewards the faithful with two discs of obscure singles and rarities.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

THE ORIGINAL RELEASE DATES: 1990-’93.

THE BACK STORY: These British trance-rockers led by former Spaceman 3 frontman Jason Pierce are one of those bands that have issued a million obscure singles and EPs over their lifetime. Luckily, Pierce — aka J Spaceman — has decided to collect and reissue them all in order. Here’s the first batch.

THE GOODIES: Nearly all two dozen cuts on this two-disc set are keepers, but I’m partial to the VU-inspired I Want You, the JJ Cale rewrite Run and the swirly summertime ode Good Dope / Good Friends.

THE EXTRAS: The all-white CD case and packaging are as sleekly stylish as many of these songs.
