Classic DVD Review: Various Artists | Punk-O-Rama: The Videos Vol. 1

The iconic punk label's music-video compilation isn't your usual waste of time.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Your typical music-video compilation is a waste of time. Thankfully, this 22-track set from iconic punk outfit Epitaph is anything but typical.

First and foremost, it’s mostly songs you haven’t already seen a bazillion times on MuchMusic (except for Offspring’s Come Out And Play). Second, the 130-minute set strikes a good balance between old guarders like Rancid, Bad Religion, NOFX and Pennywise, and newbies like Millencolin, Hot Water Music, The (International) Noise Conspiracy and Division of Laura Lee. Finally, it includes a good documentary on the label, live footage of Bad Religion and Bouncing Souls and a behind-the-scenes segment on a Pennywise video shoot. My favourite feature? The subtitles. Especially when Rancid’s Tim Armstrong is on the mic.
