British singer-songwriter Charlie Winston is bringing his most recent album As I Am to Canada this week, with seven shows in Ontario, Quebec and B.C.
As I Am, Winston’s fifth album, was conceived at a particular moment: Behind the closed doors of lockdown, and under the permanent injunction of social distancing and observance of preventative measures. It was a happy paradox, as the English singer has never really been one for self-exposure.
“The album title, As I Am, has the value of a mantra. It’s a way of reminding myself of who I am now and that letting go doesn’t mean giving up,” says the man who caused a sensation in 2009 with the hit Like A Hobo, revealing a strong folk and rock musical identity, as well as a character drawn to vagrancy, entirely oriented towards a quest for the self and the need for others.
Winston grew up, with his folk-musician parents and his musical siblings, in a Suffolk hotel through which passed an endless procession of itinerant artists, orchestras, actors and thespians. Such an environment had a great impact on Charlie, giving him a deep love for the performing arts and entertainment whilst nurturing his musical talents.
His debut album Make Way was recorded at Real World Studios in 2006. He supported Peter Gabriel on his 2007 European tour. His second album Hobo has been certified platinum. It entered the French charts at No. 3 in 2009, and peaked at No. 1 in its 25th charting week, stayed at the top for four weeks and spent 30 weeks in the Top 10. In 2010, Winston won a European Border Breakers Award for Best UK Artist in Europe.
