This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
I will never know if this Civil War pic is any good — because after hearing castmemeber Robert Duvall’s buttheaded comments on the supposed inferiority of his Canadian co-stars, I wouldn’t spend a dime to see it. Besides, if the movie is anything like the soundtrack, I’d probably snooze through most of it anyhow.
This hour-long score by John Frizzell and Randy Edelman is pretty much what you’d expect — some grandly sweeping neo-classical orchestrations, some stirring martial-themed passages, some traditional-sounding, vaguely Celtic balladry. But just as your eyelids grow their heaviest, the producers haul out the secret weapon: Bob Dylan. His ’Cross the Green Mountain — an eerily smoky, deliberately paced epic tale of a soldier’s life and death — may be the finest Civil War song since The Band’s The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. It’s certainly the most compelling eight minutes of this predictable album. Of course, that’s probably the fault of some Canadian, right Bob?
