Classic DVD Review: Dashboard Confessional | MTV Unplugged V2.0

This offering from emo phenom Chris Carraba is so intimate it’s downright creepy.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Hey, I know Unplugged gigs are supposed to be intimate. But this offering from emo phenom Dashboard Confessional is so intimate it’s downright creepy.

Not to blame sensitive singer-guitarist Christopher Carraba and his Boca Raton bandmates — they do a swell, heartfelt job of recasting Carraba’s earnest, plaintive numbers like Swiss Army Romance, Remember to Breathe and The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most into … well, earnest, plaintive numbers played on acoustic instruments. What really freaks me out, though is the studio audience — a gaggle of teens that gaze adoringly at Carraba and sing along en masse for virtually the entire show like they’ve been hypnotized. Or worse, brainwashed. Lucky for us all, Carraba seems like the harmless type — judging by this crowd, all he needs is a cache of guns and a few Bibles to redefine the term cult band.
