Classic DVD Review: Various Artists | Rage: 20 Years of Punk Rock, West Coast Style

A slate of well-known talking heads recount the glory days of California punk rock.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

The three original punk Meccas were London, New York — and last but not least, L.A.

The obviously titled 66-minute documentary Rage: 20 Years of Punk Rock, West Coast Style narrrates the rise and fall of the California scene through interviews with punk pioneers like Keith Morris (Circle Jerks), Don Bolles (The Germs) and Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys). But while their memories make for a decent music history lesson, Rage would be better with more band footage instead of just snippets. Still, it makes you realize maybe there was more than one meaning to California Uber Alles.
