Classic Album Review: Various Artists | Austin Powers in Goldmember

The superspy spoof series gets its musical mojo working overtime on this soundtrack.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Disco balls, platform shoes, gold lamé and pimpmobiles — Austin Powers should feel right at home in the ’70s.

And Mike Myers’ superspy spoof series certainly gets its musical mojo working overtime on this soundtrack to the third Powers flick Goldmember. Dr. Dre revamps The Rolling StonesMiss You into a menacing stomp; Angie Stone gets funky with King Floyd’s classic Groove Me; Smash Mouth get down with their latest soundtrack single Ain’t No Mystery; Paul Oakenfold uncorks A Fifth of Beethoven; and some K.C. classics get converted into a gold-plated theme medley. But the get-down crown belongs to Beyonce Knowles, who does Tina Turner doing James Brown on the sweaty neck-snapper Work it Out, a funkier cut than anything she’s done in Destiny’s Child. All in all, it’s a retro-boogie dance party you don’t want to miss.
