This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Nearly all rock music — at least good rock music — is about sex, cars or money. Guess which one of those dominates the NASCAR tribute album Crank it Up.
But these 18 cuts aren’t just a bunch of stock oldies. Instead, the producers cleverly convinced a squad of young hotshots to take some old classics out for a spin. So you get rap-rockers (hed)p.e. turning Jimi Hendrix’s Crosstown Traffic into a low-riding funkmobile, Buckcherry turbocharging Willie Nelson’s On the Road Again, Fear Factory restoring Gary Numan’s Cars, Slayer burning rubber on Born to Be Wild, Type O Negative putting the hammer down on Deep Purple’s Highway Star and even Primus’s Les Claypool turning Hot Rod Lincoln into a funny car. Now that’s cooking with gas. Take a victory lap, boys.
