Late-Night TV Music (Twice The Rock Edition) | April 20, 2022

Back-to-back Amy & Jack is a pretty tough combination to top.

Two great rock bands are always better than one. Even on your TV. Hell, maybe especially on your TV. And especially on an otherwise-uneventful Wednesday night.

That’s what you got last night, when the always-awesome Amyl & The Sniffers — fronted by unhinged energizer bunny Amy Taylor, who seems to be the long-lost love child of Cherie Currie, Iggy Pop and a first grader buzzing on sugar — descended on Late Night With Seth Meyers to blast through their single Hertz, perhaps history’s greatest song about having sex in the back of a rental car during a road trip.

Could it get any better than that? Well, how about Jack White’s searing performance of What’s The Trick? on The Late Show Show With Stephen Colbert? From White’s blue dye job to charismatic drummer Daru Jones’ deconstructed kit and swaggering chops, it was certainly an eye-catching affair. Plus the song itself is a freewheeling firecracker of riff-rock brilliance — and just one of several great tracks from his outstanding latest album Fear Of The Dawn.

Needless to say, it was all downhill after that. Which is not to suggest that Dove Cameron’s rendition of her vintage-sounding, noirishly soulful number Boyfriend on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon wasn’t intriguing. Or to imply that Noah Cyrus wasn’t captivating during her sultry performance of I Burned LA Down on Jimmy Kimmel Live. But let’s face it: Back-to-back Amy and Jack is a pretty tough combo to beat. Especially on your TV on a Wednesday night.
