Kelly Pardekooper knows that what goes around comes around in his latest single and video Someday Someone — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The latest standout from the Americana singer-songwriter’s recent EP Autumn, Someday Someone is a loping, guitar-driven romp down a dusty dirt road of broken hearts. “You’re knockin’ all them local boys down,” Pardekooper sings with a voice like velvet. “A heartbreaker in a one-horse town / You light ‘em up, then leave ‘em behind / A trail of tears to the county line.”
The narrator isn’t bitter, however, and seems to ultimately regard the heartbreaker’s game-playing as a challenge; the song ends with the lines: “Someday someone / Gonna love you like it’s never been done / Gonna win you like you’ve never been won.”
Speaking of winning: Pardekooper’s songs have been used in a wide variety of films and TV shows including Sons of Anarchy, True Blood, Virgin River, Longmire, Justified and others. But during the first year of the pandemic, Pardekooper wasn’t inspired to write new music at all — he didn’t touch his guitar the whole time.
After his wife accepted a job in Las Vegas and the couple sold their house in Indianapolis to move across country to Sin City, Pardekooper found the change of scenery sparked his inspiration. “Renting a small apartment, I wrote these seven new songs staring out the window at the mountains a lot,” he shares. “And it was wonderful to reconnect with my old friend Teddy Morgan and record this new music with him in Nashville. There’s something very special and unspoken that happens when working with trusted music friends. I’m grateful the songs keep coming.”
Along with Morgan, who Pardekooper refers to as his “partner in vibe,” Autumn also features Pat Sansone of Wilco on organ and piano. In addition to Someday Someone, the EP also includes the understated vibe of Dejamos; Forever Broken Hearted, a mellow rock-infused ballad about letting go of a long-lost love; Tried To Let Go, a sparse lament about a fresher romantic wound; I’m Leaving, a pounding, resounding rocker about setting boundaries and getting the hell out; the title track, which evokes the warm glow of the season and of an old flame; and Sleep Tight, a shimmery, silky lullaby.
