Sometimes good things come in fours. At least, that was the deal on Tuesday’s late-night TV shows. Between them, they delivered a quartet of solid musical performances.
Let’s start with the ever-enticing Big Thief, sharing an intimate version of Simulation Swarm on The Last Show With Stephen Colbert. Intimate would also be a good word for Jim James’ dimly lit solo rendition of In Color on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Meanwhile, over on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Mitski gets bonus points for actually showing up in the studio to deliver a typically artsy and striking take on her moody indie-rocker Stay Soft. And finally, over on The Late Late Show With James Corden, New Jersey rockers Pinegrove made their late-night TV debut — and acquitted themselves well — with their rootsy number Cyclone. All in all, not a dud in the bunch. I’d call that a good night’s work. Here’s hoping it’s a sign of things to come.
