Classic DVD Review: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band | Live in New York City

The Boss and his reunited band make a triumphant return with this powerful set.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

The Main Course: Broooooooooce!! Broooooooooce!! Broooooooooce!! — Springsteen, that is — leading his reunited E Street Band through 14 classic songs taped during the group’s multi-night residency in Madison Square Garden at the end of their comeback tour in 2000.

Side Dishes: And how — an entire disc of extra concert footage, with the band delivering powerful versions of Backstreets, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Jungleland, Light of Day, Thunder Road, Ramrod, If I Should Fall Behind, and four more; a photo gallery; and Bruce all but gritting his teeth as he’s being interrogated by (for some reason) sports mouthpiece Bob Costas.

Easter Eggs: No, but come on — what more could you possibly want?

Final Verdict: If you’ve heard the live CD, you had to see the concert when it was shown on HBO and TMN earlier this year. If you saw the concert, now you have to see the extra cuts. And if you’re a Bruce fan — or know one — this set is a no-brainer.
