Classic Album Review: The Crystal Method | Tweekend

The L.A. Big Beaters keep on partying like like it's 1997. Too bad for them it ain't.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Remember Big Beat? It was going to be the Next Big Thing there for a while. Now it seems like a decade ago that we were listening to Chemical Brothers’ block-rocking beats.

L.A.’s Crystal Method, it seems, still haven’t left those halcyon days. On their unrepentantly retro third album Tweekend, they return with all their synthesizers a-buzzin’ and their drum machines a whumpin’ and their Vocoders a-vocoderizin’, just like it was still the summer of ’97. Too bad it ain’t. And all the guest spots in the world from rock-cred figures like former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Stone Temple Pilots’ singer Scott Weiland can’t make this Tweekend any more exciting than watching a four-year-old episode of Electric Circus.
