Classic Album Review: Alice Cooper | Mascara & Monsters: The Best of

The Coop boils his Life & Crimes box down to 24 essentials — and adds one rarity.

This album came out a couple of decades ago. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Not enough of an Alice Cooper fan to shell out the big bucks for his mammoth four-disc Life and Crimes box set? Here’s a cheaper, less time-consuming option.

Mascara & Monsters is basically a scaled-down single-disc version of the box, featuring nearly two dozen digitally remastered Coop classics — from I’m Eighteen, School’s Out and Elected to You and Me, I Never Cry and Poison — along with the mandatory Extra Song That Wasn’t In The Box Set (Generation Landslide). Like all retrospectives, fans can quibble about which classic track has been overlooked — Dead Babies and I Love the Dead are sorta conspicuous by their absence. But no matter how you slice it, this is still a solid single-disc Cooper hits set.
