Stones, Thunders & Nickelback Reissues Top Today’s Album Announcements

Most days, we are naturally all about the new music here in the Album Announcements Dept. But every now and then, it’s all about the oldies. And today is definitely one of those days, thanks to not one but three archival releases debuting at the top of the list.

First and foremost, unsurprisingly, are The Rolling Stones, whose endless campaign to resurrect, retool and reissue every moment of their career continues unimpeded. Mere weeks after announcing their expanded re-release of their classic Goats Head Soup, The World’s Greatest Rock ’n’ Roll Band have added another title to the queue: Steel Wheels Live: Atlantic City, New Jersey. Available in a variety of audio and video configurations, the Sept. 25 box set captures a star-studded 1989 performance that features guest spots by John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton, Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin — though the gig might be more famous for backstage drama between Keith Richards and Donald Trump, who apparently weaseled his way into the proceedings as a promoter, then tried to upstage the band. Here’s hoping we see some of that on the DVD.

Next up — and frankly, more interesting to me than the Stones gig — is an expanded, remixed reissue of Johnny Thunders’ final solo studio album Que Sera Sera. It’s hardly the high point of his career, but it also boasts a VIP lineup that includes Mike Monroe, Patti Palladin, Wilko Johnson, Henri-Paul Tortosa, Nasty Suicide, Stiv Bators, Glen Matlock and others. This updated version — titled Que Sera Sera: Resurrected and arriving Sept. 11 — also includes a couple of studio outtakes and portions from three live gigs on a bonus disc. Count me in.

And finally, Nickelback are releasing a 15th anniversary Deluxe Edition of All The Right Reasons. The reason behind that is truly beyond me. But I’m sure someone somewhere will care. Of course, there’s also plenty of truly new music on the way, including albums by Laura Veirs and, um, McFly. Scroll down to see all the latest additions, and pop over the Upcoming Releases page for the entire list.
