Life is moving pretty fast these days — and not always in the right direction. So why should the music business be any different? Just when you thought it was safe to hole up and ride out COVID-19 with all the new music on the way, a slew of artists are pushing back their album release dates to summer and fall. Why? Well, it could be that the entire industry came to its senses en masse and realized that the pandemic was going to last longer than anticipated. But I suspect it had just as much to do with Amazon’s recent announcement to stop accepting new CD and vinyl shipments, coupled with news that streaming numbers may actually be dropping as people focus their attention on news and Netflix. Or maybe it’s something else entirely. I dunno. All I can tell you is that over the course of the day, this happened:
• The release of Haim’s Women In Music Pt. III and Lady Gaga’s Chromatica were delayed indefinitely.
• Willie Nelson’s First Rose of Spring was pushed back to July 3.
• DMA’s The Glow moved to July 10.
• The Pretenders’ Hate For Sale shifted to July 17 (though they also released the swell title cut above, which was some compensation).
• Declan McKenna’s Zeros moved to Aug. 21.
• Kelly Lee Owens’ Inner Song was delayed to Aug. 28
• Beyond The Pale from Jarvis Cocker’s band Jarv… Is moved to Sept 4.
Of course, since there is always a reaction for every action, a couple or artists actually moved up their release dates. Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia will arrive this Friday instead of next week, while Sufjan Stevens & Lowell Brams’ Aporia is out right now (and streaming in full below). And as always, plenty of other artists announced new titles to fill the void — at least for now. Scroll down to see all the latest additions, and then move over to the Upcoming Releases page to keep track of all the madness.
