Winnipeg really ought to consider giving Lee Ranaldo the key to the city. After all, the former Sonic Youth guitarist has basically been an honourary Winnipegger for decades. He’s married to multi-media artist and former Garden City resident Leah Singer (full disclosure: We went to junior high together). He has visited the city countless times (though ironically, SY never played here). And perhaps most importantly, his time here has influenced his art — like the lyrics to Sonic Youth’s Hoarfrost, for example. Just today, he announced another Winnipeg-inspired creation: Names of North End Women, an upcoming collaborative album with flamenco guitarist Raül Refree. Based around the names of inner-city streets like Dagmar, Ellen, Francis, Gertie and so on, the Feb. 21 release also features a tune called At The Forks, named after a local historic site. If that isn’t enough to earn him the same civic honour bestowed upon the likes of Shannen Doherty, Henry Winkler and Gene Simmons, I don’t know what is. Anyway, check out a preview of the disc above, scroll down to see the rest of today’s new album announcements, and head over to the Upcoming Releases page to see the complete, insanely long list.
