Psychedelic Porn Crumpets | And Now For the Whatchamacallit

Meet the latest Australian band to come bearing freaky tastes and a freakier name.

WHO ARE THEY? The latest in a seemingly endless series of Australian rock bands with freaky tastes and freakier names (see also: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Tropical F*ck Storm, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys, etc).

WHAT IS THIS? Their third full-length — though their debut High Visceral was a double album divided into two parts, so this is also kind of their sophomore release. Because the Aussies just can’t do anything normal.

WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE? 33 minutes of, yes, psychedelia — but turbocharged with boogie-rock beats, pointedly prominent guitars, glammy falsetto vocals and other pop-rockist trappings.

WHAT WOULD BE A BETTER TITLE FOR THIS ALBUM? Aussie Rules.

HOW SHOULD I LISTEN TO IT? While enjoying at least one of their three titular temptations.

WHAT 10 WORDS DESCRIBE IT? Vigourous, colourful, playful, propulsive, cartoonish, edgy, intriguing, expansive, inventive, angular.

WHAT ARE THE BEST SONGS? The meaty, beaty, big and bouncy Bill’s Mandolin; the spiky Hymn For a Droid; the guitar monster When in Rome.

WHAT WILL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY THINK? That they’re way better than their name.

HOW OFTEN WILL I LISTEN TO THIS? If you like any of the bands listed above, often enough.

IF THIS ALBUM WERE AN ANIMAL, WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL WOULD IT BE? A duck-billed platypus splashed with day-glo paint.

SHOULD I BUY, STREAM OR STEAL? Somebody has to pay for porn.
