Late-Night TV Music | May 7, 2019

Vampire Weekend, Tom Odell, Pink Sweat$ and more from Tuesday's TV lineup.

I don’t really have any snappy patter when it comes to Tuesday night’s televised music segments. Except to say that I’m disappointed to see that Vampire Weekend have now become one of those bands who apparently need umpteen auxiliary members to play live, based on their performance of This Life on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Granted, they sounded fine and everything — but I was more impressed with Tom Odell on The Late Late Show With James Corden — chiefly because his song Son of An Only Child has an Elton John-circa-Tumbleweed Connection vibe (which reminds me that I should listen to that album again). Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel Live filled the soul/R&B requirement for the evening with the help of Pink Sweat$, who sang a medley of Honesty and Coke & Henny Pt. 2 (do people really drink that? Cause is sounds disgusting), while annoying typographed New Jersey electro-popsters A R I Z O N A presented Find Someone on Late Night With Seth Meyers. And finally, Last Call With Carson Daly gave us some decently scrappy indie-rock from Ex Hex and their songs Tough Enough and Rainbow Shiner. All in all, not a bad lot. Enjoy the rest of your day.
