American Thanksgiving is apparently such a giant production that it takes the whole country days to prepare and even more time to recover. At least, that’s how I’m going to explain the fact that there were only two paltry musical performers on the late-night shows Tuesday. Oh well, at least they were both interesting in different ways. For me, the better of the two was R&B singer-songwriter H.E.R. — which stands for Having Everything Revealed, though her real name is Gabi Wilson — who revealed the powerful, swelling track Fate on Jimmy Kimmel Live. And she gets bonus points for being an artist who actually plays an instrument. On the other side of the coin was Migos member Takeoff, who pulled out all the stops — including eye-catching production, odd wardrobe choices and a DJ who really needs to rein it in — to help him make the most of his meandering, fairly unexceptional performance of Last Memory on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. As for the rest of the shows, I’m just going to assume they were busy defrosting turkey and making stuffing. I hope they put enough sage in it.
