Water, water, everywhere. If you love a good, soppy ballad — or any ballad, really — you were in your element on Wednesday as the late-night TV shows dimmed the lights and let performers show their softer sides. And their damper sides. First up: Canada’s own Avril Lavigne. Returning to the spotlight after a battle with Lyme disease, she debuted her emotional new single Head Above Water on Jimmy Kimmel Live (above). Meanwhile, Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny made his TV debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, singing the moving Estamos Bien in tribute to Hurricane Maria victims. And Josh Groban continued to bang the drum for his new Bridges album by working the water imagery of River on The Late Late Show with James Corden. On the slightly drier side of the ballad ledger, Late Show with Stephen Colbert bandleader Jon Batiste took centre stage with the romantic Don’t Stop, a track from his new Hollywood Africans album. And over on Last Call With Carson Daly, singer-songwriter Ashe lulled fans with Real Love and Wrong Side of Myself. Now that we’ve all had a good cry, let’s towel off and try this again tomorrow.
