Alba Fury swallow their pride and bare their souls in their angsty and angular new single and visualizer video This Is Why — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The sophomore single from the up-and-coming Scottish post-punks will resonate with anyone who’s ever felt their knees go weak, their mouth turn dry and their thoughts vanish into the ether whenever they try to share their feelings or emotions with others. Voiced with soul-baring urgency amid a murky, roiling sonic cylone that mirrors the emotional turmoil at its heart, This Is Why is an unofficial anthem for our socially anxious age.
“This Is Why is a song about acknowledging when you need help with emotional issues, whatever they may be,” elaborates Jamie Thomson, the band’s songwriter and bass player. “It’s about the anxiety that stems from our fear of being judged, rejected, or hurt as a result of revealing personal weaknesses or insecurities. Ultimately though, it’s a hopeful song about how facing vulnerability can lead to self-awareness and emotional resilience.”
Appropriately, the track is raw and driving, held down by a motoric rhythm section, and complemented by haunting, yet melodic guitar riffs. With pounding tom-heavy drums reminiscent of Nirvana’s Territorial Pissings, This Is Why builds towards a rollicking chorus. The vocal melodies and reflective lyrics have pop sensibilities, delivered in a controlled, yet confrontational Scottish brogue.
In keeping with the band’s DIY ethos, the single was produced largely in-house. It was recorded partly in Aberdeen, with Billboard-charting producer Ryan (RYZY) MacKay tracking the drums and bass. The guitar and vocals were recorded by the band in Edinburgh, with mixing and post-production handled by Thomson. The track was mastered by Philip Marsden in Oxford. The release coincides with the band’s next gig at The Old Dr Bells Baths in Leith, Edinburgh, where they are supporting The View’s Kyle Falconer, alongside DOVV, Stagboy, Robin Ashcroft and Rosie Alice.
Alba Fury are a four-piece indie band based in West Lothian and Edinburgh. Their debut single Out Of Time was released in November 2024, and received wide coverage in the music press. They cite Fontaines DC, Sprints, Young Fathers and Joy Division as influences. In addition to Thompson, the band includes Michael Ward (lead vocals), Sam Greig (guitar) and Fraser Plumb (drums). They look forward to bringing their energetic performance to audiences across Scotland and further afield in the coming months.
