Classic DVD Review: Eric Clapton & Various Artists | Crossroads Guitar Festival

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Eric Clapton shares the stage with a slew of six-string stars on this two-disc set shot last summer in Texas.

The blues-heavy lineup includes OG icons (Honeyboy Edwards and Hubert Sumlin), rock stars (ZZ Top), old folkies (James Taylor), jazzbos (John McLaughlin and Larry Carlton), country boys (Vince Gill and Dan Tyminski), pyrotechnic whiz kids (Steve Vai) and plenty more, including about a dozen tracks with Slowhand himself. Bonus for guitar buffs: The set allows you to skip straight to the solos. But don’t skip ZZ Top’s two-step choreography, Vai’s neck-swapping fireworks and Joe Walsh’s snidely frank intro to his slow-rolling ’70s standard Rocky Mountain Way: “If I knew I was gonna hafta sing this for the rest of my life, I woulda written something else.”
