Classic Anthology Review: Rodney Crowell | The Essential

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

No single-disc set could do justice to Nashville veteran and acclaimed singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell’s 25-year career. But even if this collection is incomplete, it’s undeniably a consistently strong overview of his solo work.

Songs: 16.

Actual Hits: Oldies like Stars on the Water and Shame on the Moon, along with newer fare like Still Learning How to Fly and Fate’s Right Hand.

Missing In Action: A career’s worth — especially more tracks from his 2001 masterpiece The Houston Kid.

Extras! Extras! New recordings of I Ain’t Living Long Like This and ’Til I Gain Control Again.
