Classic Album Review: Jill Scott | Beautifully Human

The gifted vocalist finds her groove again on this long-overdue sophomore release.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Success very nearly spoiled Jill Scott. Or at least it nearly spoiled music for her.

Disillusioned by the demands of fame after the success of her 2000 debut This is Jill Scott, the gifted vocalist retreated from the spotlight to see if inspiration would strike again. I am glad to report it did, and the long-overdue sophomore studio disc Beautifully Human is the splendid proof. Picking up where This Is… left off, Scott offers a gorgeously soulful 17-song set swirling with seductive grooves, positive vibes, poetic lyrics and silky, intimate vocals that straddle the fence between hip-hop, neo-soul and jazz. You can only hope she doesn’t get spooked again.
