Ash is caught up in romantic mind games in her soulful and sad new single Reverse Psychology — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The second single from the Beijing-raised, New York City-based pop singer and songwriter, Reverse Psychology is an alluringly frank exploration of the complexities of a relationship falling apart. Ash captures the desperation of trying to hold on to something that’s irreparably broken. Her heartbreaking vocals, paired with delicate guitar lines and an intoxicating beat, evoke the raw emotions of this kind of hopelessness. The song delves into how emotional manipulation from someone you love can erode trust, leaving behind a poignant sense of defeat.
Composed, written, produced, and performed by Ash, this new single — the followup to her debut Infatuated — is a testament to her potential as a multi-hyphenate artist. Her music is a rich tapestry of influences, intertwining elements from R&B, pop and neo-soul. Yet she transcends genre confines, crafting an immersive sonic universe that is uniquely her own. Ash meticulously cultivates every aspect of her artistic vision from writing and producing each track to directing her own videos.
Raised in an international community in Beijing, Ash’s musical journey began alongside a traditional academic path. A classically trained pianist from the age of four, she later taught herself guitar, bass, and drums during her teenage years, performing at every opportunity. Balancing her passion for music with academic excellence, Ash attended the prestigious University of Pennsylvania for her undergraduate education. Her love for the performing arts continued to flourish, starring in sold-out live shows each semester. After earning a scholarship from The New School in New York City to pursue her master’s degree in music, Ash honed her craft, writing, producing, and perfecting her debut project. Her demos caught the attention of Grammy-winning engineer Jeff Ellis (Frank Ocean, Doja Cat, Kali Uchis), who mixed her forthcoming EP.
