This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
First he was a post-grunge teen-rocker. Then he was a quirky, precocious popster. Now, on his third solo CD, Ben Kweller unveils his latest persona — mature songwriter.
Ditching the Beckish folk-hop and reining in his goofier lyrical impulses, Kweller layers personal lyrics over musical backdrops that toggle between crunchy power-pop guitars and earnest piano-rock balladry. He’s on his way, all right — but the best part is even he doesn’t seem to know exactly where yet.
