Classic Album Review: Sufjan Stevens | Seven Swans

The singer-songwriter moves from Michigan to a state of grace on this hushed LP.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Bedroom-folk original Sufjan Stevens’ last CD was a full-length ode to his Michigan birthplace — supposedly the first of 50 planned discs honouring all the states.

This CD is less ambitious but no less intriguing, thanks to Stevens’ ability to draw you into his Elliott Smithian world of hushed vocals, melancholy melody, shimmering arpeggios and idiosyncratic pop arrangements. He may not be in Michigan, but he’s undeniably in a state of grace.
