Classic Album Review: The Flashing Lights | Where The Change Is

Super Friendz frontman Matt Murphy's new band arrive just in time to save rock.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Look, up on the stage! It’s an indie-rock band! It’s a pop quartet! It’s Super Friendz! Well, almost.

Actually, it’s Super Friendz leader Matt Murphy’s new outfit — but super is still the word that most-adequately describes Flashing Lights’ debut album. Although stellar, wondrous, joyful, awesome and just plain wow! will also do a pretty good job of summing up your impression of Murphy’s British Invasion-style pop — a mix of Ray Davies’ whinge and wit, Beatle-pop harmonies and Who-style passion and abandon. In a world of soundalike modern-rock careerists and manufactured teenybopper poster boys, we need all the heroes we can get; luckily, Flashing Lights have come to save the day.
