Classic Album Reviews: Pulley | Matters / Ten Foot Pole | Subliminable Messages

The kindred punk spirits won't change the world — but they can rock yours for a bit.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Pulley and Ten Foot Pole have a few things in common.

They’re both punk bands. They’re both from California. And Pulley singer (and former MLB relief pitcher) Scott Radinsky used to man the mic for TFP. Not surprisingly, they’re also kindred musical spirits, though hardly carbon copies. On their fifth full-length Matters, Pulley pull out a rock-solid set of surging pop-punk anthems chock fulla buzzsaw guitars, mile-high harmonies and full-throated vocals reminiscent of Bad Religion. Meanwhile, on their more overtly Bush-bashing disc Subliminable Messages, Ten Foot Pole play it a little harder and heavier, preferring the thicker grooves and chunkier guitars of metal — though they still whip off the hyperspeed punk moves and juvenile lyrics at the drop of a hat. Ultimately, neither one is going to change your world. Either should be able to rock yours for a half-hour or so, mind you.
